Embedded Systems Design Lab
High Volume and Cost Sensitive Design Assistance
While not every application requires an ultra low-cost micro-controller, many products would simply not be marketable without a very low Bill of Materials cost. In particular, two product categories stand out in this regard. The first is items manufactured in high volume. Examples are numerous - consumer remote controls, digital thermometers, children's toys - the list goes on. The second product category requiring a low-cost micro-controller is cost-sensitive applications, in which the product itself must sell at a low price point. Examples here include LED flashlights, lamp timers, fan thermostats - the list goes on here as well, with numerous brand new product possibilities emerging each year as advances in low-cost micro-controller chips and tools are made. An embedded processor costing from $1 to $3 just a few years ago can now be replicated at a $0.03 to $0.10 price-point!
Our Role in Your Design Process
We at the Embedded Systems Design™ Lab utilize Padauk Technology™ micro-controllers (www.padauk.com.tw) to help our customers attain reliable, full-featured product functionality with micro-controllers designed from the start for low-cost performance. We understand the trade-offs that the Padauk micro-controller designers made to keep the IC die size small to provide the best cost/performance ratio. For example, not all of the standard 'C' language commands can be used with a Padauk micro-controller, however an effective high-level language, Mini-C, allows rapid firmware development for your new product application, and readability for ongoing maintenance ans support. While many companies move past Padauk micro-controllers due to certain caveats in the programming language, we embrace the trade-offs that Padauk has made in bringing such tremendous micro-controller power to a price-point formerly thought impossible. Embedded Systems Design Lab assists your in-house engineering team, writing firmware for your Padauk micro-controller design, and assisting to integrate the IC with your product's hardware. You own the full design upon completion, and are free to use, enhance, or improve the design going forward. We're happy to provide ongoing support if desired, or to perform a one-off design and hand over to your team for manufacturing.
We sometimes are asked, what exactly are the differences between an ultra-low cost Padauk micro-controller that costs $0.03, and a traditional micro-controller that costs $1? One example that comes to mind first is that Padauk micro-controllers are custom-built for embedded control applications. For example, the Padauk compiler does not have inherent multiplication support - although there are workarounds for applications that require this. Another example is the absence of traditional hardware peripherals. Instead, peripherals such as UART and SPI communications controllers are implemented as software in a second thread execution register set time-multiplexed with the primary execution engine. Though up-front design effort can at times be greater than dropping in a traditional, high-cost micro-controller, the long-run cost savings of integrating a Padauk micro-controller into your design can be tremendous.
The Design Ownership is 100% Yours
With a description of the functionality your product requires from its micro-controller, we will create custom firmware for your application, assisting your team to integrate the Padauk micro-controller into your circuitry and printed circuit board. We'll work with you to verify full operation through testing, and upon completion deliver fully documented source code and programming files to you. You will own all the design files and related copyright. We put our Padauk micro-controller design expertise and experience to work for your company, enabling a rapid time-to-market for your new product, with a Bill of Materials cost previously thought impossible.
In addition, we're happy to provide support to your manufacturing process, and feature upgrades to the firmware as needed.
Let Embedded Systems Design Lab ease your path to cost-sensitive product design! Contact our Chief Technical Officer Todd Peterson at [email protected] for a no-obligation discussion of your application to determine if our services would be a benefit to you.
